This horseradish sauce is creamy with just the right heat on the finish! Use it for dolloping on steak, sandwiches, vegetables and more.

Horseradish Sauce

If you love spicy foods, there’s nothing better than the intense burn of horseradish. Here’s a way to harness that power into a condiment to slather on just about anything: this creamy Horseradish Sauce recipe! This delectable sauce pairs sour cream, mayo and a hint of Dijon and vinegar with prepared horseradish. To say it’s irresistible is an understatement. It’s traditionally served with steak or prime rib, but use it to add flair to just about anything: baked potatoes, roasted vegetables, grilled salmon, and more.

Ingredients for horseradish sauce

Most creamy horseradish sauce recipes are sour cream-based. For this recipe, we’ve combined sour cream with a little mayonnaise to add even more richness and flavor. (It’s a trick we use in many sauces and dressings, like Caesar dressing or avocado crema.) It makes a perfectly balanced sauce that’s delightfully creamy and ideal for dolloping on prime rib and vegetables alike. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Prepared horseradish: see more below!
  • Sour cream
  • Mayonnaise
  • Dijon mustard
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Chopped chives
  • Salt and pepper

Head to the recipe below for the quantities! Just mix the ingredients in a bowl, and it’s ready! Chopped chives are optional, but they add a lovely onion flavor and look to the sauce.

Portobello Mushroom Sandwich

What is prepared horseradish?

You can use fresh horseradish root to make a horseradish sauce, but why spend time grating when there’s prepared horseradish? Here’s the difference between the two:

  • Horseradish is a spicy root vegetable in the same vegetable family as wasabi. It’s a cruciferous vegetable, just like broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. You can find fresh horseradish sold in the produce section of the grocery store: it looks like a long brown root.
  • Prepared horseradish is a condiment made with grated horseradish, vinegar and salt. This makes the horseradish easy to use right away without grating. It’s sold in jars in the grocery store in the condiments section.

Prepared horseradish is so much easier to work with, and the flavor is not much different from using the grated root. It’s also milder than the fresh root, so it’s easier to control the spice level when you add it to recipes.

Ways to use horseradish sauce

Horseradish sauce is traditionally served with prime rib or steak, but there are so many more uses for this creamy sauce. In fact, because it’s associated with meat it can give a meaty sensation to eating a vegetarian sandwich: like a Portobello Mushroom Burger! Here are some ways to serve it:
